1.The foundation

According to the Decision No. 92/2004 /QĐ–TTg on May 25, 2004 of the Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the College of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (name in English is College of Technology, Vietnam national University, Hanoi, abbreviated to COLTECH), was founded on the basis of expanding the Department of Technology of Hanoi National University, and the Centre for Cooperation and Training in Mechanics. The College of Technology (COLTECH) is a member college of Vietnam National University, Hanoi – a Centre for training in multibranch and multifield with high quality, strives to get advanced standard in the region. At present, 2 main faculties of COLTECH are: Faculty of Information Technology (founded on February 22^nd, 1995) and Faculty of Electronics – Telecommunications (founded on January 3^rd, 1996), which have development history for many years in Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The COLTECH proceeds with the tradition of University Hanoi and the Faculty of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi). Prof. Acad. Nguyen Van Hieu is headmaster, who founded the college.

At present, the COLTECH has 4 faculties (Information - Technology, Electronics and Communication, Engineering Physic and Nano technology, Engineering Mechanic and Automation) and 3 centers (Software Engineering Research and Development Center, Electronics – Telecommunication Center and Center of Computer).

The college trains graduate in 5 disciplines: Information - Technology, Electronics – Telecom, Physical Engineering oriented to Nano technology, Mechanical Engineering and Electronics with about 3400 students. Now there are about 580 master students and graduate students, they are studying in 8 disciplines trained postgraduate. Apart from 86 faculty staffs (1 Prof.& Dr.Sc., 1 Prof. & Dr., 14 Asso. Prof. & Dr., 28 Dr. and 29 MSc.), there are 50 concurrently held lecturers (12 Professors, 24 Readers, 24 Doctor) from specialized Institute of Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology lecturing specialist disciplines at the faculties. Every year, the member colleges of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi appoint about 60 lecturers (like professional lecturers of COLTECH) to give lessons about basic knowledge (mathematics, physics, language, society, and humanities) for students of COLTECH.

5. Tradition and specificity

* Tradition: The COLTECH follows and bring into play the traditions of the University of Hanoi and the Faculty of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), has origin and has a strong attachment to the College of Natural Sciences (Vietnam National University, Hanoi).  

* International standardization: The training program of degrees at COLTECH is realized according to the advanced training program in the world, among them, the field in Information - Technology is realized to ACM Computing Curricula 2004, Electronics – Telecom according to the advanced training program of Singapore and Australia. The international certification of qualification and English is required in the high qualitative training program, and is encouraged in the standard training program. The COLTECH is the first college to give test’s content of Technology of Information engineer and worker with Japan into training program. In the year 2005, over 80 % of Information - Technology graduate have reached standard of Technology of Information engineer and worker with Japan and over 65 % have English over 500 point TOEFL. The team COLTECH-Chicken of COLTECH including of 3 students K48: Le Huy Binh, Phan Da Phuc, Tran Thi Thuy Trang has 44 rank at the final round of computer programmer’s competition for student in the world ACM/ICPC at Tokyo, Japan (there are 88 students’ teams from advanced College over the world, which are selected in to the final round).

In school year 2007- 2008, the COLTECH was approved to deploy to build and organize the realization of advanced training program in the world in 2 fields: Information Technology and Electronics – Telecommunication, with the aim that: the training program of college must be in conformity with the training programs at the advanced colleges in the world in order to realize the associated training with the colleges quoted above. In the college there is realization of Master and Dr. training programs associating with the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), with the Osaka University, and Paris Sud. In May 2007, the representative office of JAIST in the Southeast Asia region, which is located at COLTECH, started operation.

* Association between College – Institute – and establishment of industry: The activities of Association between College – Institute – and establishment of industry is realized according to the agreements in term between COLTECH and 5 institutes directly under Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology (Information - Technology, Physics, Science of Materials, Mechanics, and Biotechnology); moreover Industrial Machinery and Instruments Holding from Ministry of Industry has permitted for both to promote their ability into the association. The Department of Mechanical Engineering, automation, and training discipline of mechanical economics are units, which must be under control and dependent on the Institute of mechanics; some laboratories of partner institutes are subordinated units of the COLTECH. The COLTECH and Institute of Mathematics (Vietnamese Academy of Sciences of Science and Technology) are preparing the term of agreement for improving the training quality in mathematical knowledge for technology. At present, the COLTECH has 50 concurrently held lecturers. They are the scientists with high qualification, who go to give lessons. After holding an opinion poll of students in May 2006, the result is that, the students appreciate highly the quality of lessons from concurrently held lecturers.

The COLTECH has deployed the rich cooperation activities with the industrial company such as: Oracle, IBM, MicroSoft, CISCO, Toshiba, Fujitsu, LG-Vietnam, FPT (FIS, FSOFT, Dong Du, FYT), CSE, HiPT, Tan Dan, ISA, VCC, Peacesoft, Vietsoftware, Peacesoft, Alliant, Cybersoft… in order to expand the environment of trainee and working in groups for students.

6. Project for building of the College of Technology at Hoa Lac

Project for building of the College of Technology at Hoa Lac is a partial project (sign is QG-HN-08) in overall project for building of Vietnam National University, Hanoi at Hoa Lac. The project is progressed on the area of about 30 ha with floor area for using 273000 m2, satisfies comprehensively the requires that: In the year 2020, the COLTECH with scale of education is: 5450 graduate students (3300 students study modern program of the world), 1700 postgraduate students (450 students and graduate students study modern program of the world), 720 lecturers (achieve the ratio of 10 students to 1 lecturer) with over 85% having the postgraduate standard (over 65 % have PhD. degree) and a system of university, which is digitalized comprehensively (the Intranet management, the Intranet student, the Electronic library, the Public website, the system of e-learning, and the COLTECH-portal).
